The History of Earl Grey Tea
Home : Articles : The History of Earl Grey Tea

The History of Earl Grey TeaEarl Grey was traditionally a blend of unsteamed black teas from China which were then combined with natural Bergamot Oil, taken from the Bergamot Tree. It was this citrus fruit that gave the tea it's famously perfumed aroma and flavour. Nowadays it is more likely that Earl Grey is made with Indian and Sri Lankan black tea.

The original blend of Earl Grey tea was for a man called Charles Grey (Second Earl), who was a British diplomat on a mission to China. Legend has it that he was given the recipe by a local Mandarin Chinese friend.

The unique flavour of Earl Grey tea can be attributed to the Bergamot Orange. Oil of Bergamot is extracted from the rind and is infused into the tea. Charles Grey later went on to become the British Prime Minister. He is noted for ending the monopoly on tea imports which became so profitable for the East India Company.

For a truly elegant, flavoured taste you can try our Earl Grey.
