Tea BagsThe very last London Tea Auction was held on Monday the 29th of June, 1998. Jonathan Wild, Chairman of Taylors of Harrowgate, secured the last lot of tea to be auctioned off by bidding £555 per kilogram. This was the highest bid ever in the 300 year history of the London Tea Auction. The proceeds from the last ever London Tea Auction were donated to charity.

The first London Tea Auction was held 300 years ago in 1706. It didn't take long for London to become the centre of the tea trade as tea from plantations around the world was shipped back on clippers. It was at the London Tea Auction where the first chests of Assam tea were sold in 1838. Demand was high, so as soon as the tea arrived at the dockside it was quickly snapped up by eager tea merchants. However, as worldwide trade opened up and was made faster with the advent of air transportation, the London Tea Auction became less important.
