Home : Recipes : Bread : Whole Wheat Bread Recipe

The Whole Wheat Bread recipe is a traditional favourite in Ireland, giving you a full bodied bread that is just great during those winter months. Perfect with soup or a stew. Ideal with a big cup of Irish tea.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 3 cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 3 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 2 cups Water (Warmed slightly)
  • 1/2 cup Cornmeal
  • 1 tbl Salt
  • 1 tbl Sugar
  • Active Dry Yeast

How To Make

  1. In a bowl, mix together the yeast and lukewarm water.
  2. Start to mix in the flour. Add in a cup of whole wheat flour and stir, then a cup of all-purpose flour and stir. Repeat until all the flour is added.
  3. Knead the mixture into a fairly firm dough, then place in a greased baking tin and let it rise until about double the size.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a rolling board and shape into a loaf. Sprinkle generously with cornmeal.
  5. Place in a preheated oven at 400 F for about three quarters of an hour, or until baked.
